Brain Lesion


A brain lesion is a damaged or destructed area in the brain that may be isolated or there may be numerous areas affected.

Causes of Brain Lesion

  • Trauma to brain
  • Bleeding or swelling within the brain
  • Brain disease that can cause inflammation, malfunction, or destruction of a brain cells or brain tissue
  • Inflammatory and autoimmune diseases
  • Stroke or cerebral infarction
  • Primary or secondary brain tumor

Types of Abnormal Brain Lesions

Brain lesions can be of following different types:

  • Small tumors, either benign or cancerous
  • A clump of blood vessels
  • Atrophied (shrunken) areas of the brain

Signs and Symptoms of Brain lesion

Symptoms produced by a brain lesion depend upon its size and location. They can be minimal or life-threatening and may include any of the following:

  • Seizures
  • Extreme headache described as worst headache of life
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Neck pain
  • Affected vision or speech
  • Weakness or paralysis of the one side of body
  • Loss of memory
  • Confusion
  • Extreme or subtle changes in personality of the person
  • Loss of concentration
  • Inability to speak words properly
  • Behavioural changes

Diagnosis of Brain lesion

It requires thorough history taking along with physical and neurological examination of the patient to diagnose brain lesion. Most of the cases also need following diagnostic tests too:

  • CT scan
  • MRI
  • Angiography
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Blood tests

Treatment of Brain lesion

Treatment and prognosis of brain lesions specifically depend upon the cause of lesion and the degree of damage it has caused to the brain.
