Endoscopic Surgery


Endoscopic surgery is a procedure that utilizes a specialized instrument called endoscope to diagnose and treat diseases of the internal organs and body vessels. Endoscope is a flexible tube with an attached camera that allows the doctor to see the anatomy of internal organs on monitor outside the room. Endoscope is inserted through small incisions or natural body openings without making large incisions.

Preparation for an Endoscopy

Endoscopy requires fasting for up to 12 hours before the procedure and the surgeon may prescribe laxatives or enemas to use the night before the procedure to clear the digestive system. Surgeon takes complete medical, medicinal, surgical and allergic history of the patient and also does physical examination.

Every patient is given an instruction booklet to follow few days before the day of surgery that may include stopping certain drugs, alcohol consumption etc. Patient is also advised to plan for someone else to drive home after the procedure because of the effect of anaesthesia.

Endoscopy procedure

The exact procedure and choice of anaesthesia depends upon the type of endoscopy. Endoscope may be inserted through a natural opening or very small incisions to make a diagnosis take a sample of tissue (biopsy) or perform minor surgery. Once the endoscopy is complete, the endoscope is removed.
After an Endoscopy

It is performed mostly as an outpatient procedure and patient may go home the same day after a brief period of observation. Patient is given instructions on how to care for this wound, medication and follow up.
