How do I know if my child has a neurological disorder?

Date :11-Jul-2020

Neurological disorders are abnormalities in the brain, nervous system or muscle cells and there can be a number of reasons why a child might have a neurological issue. They can occur in children right from birth or can be acquired result of a traumatic injury or serious infection. For a growing child, it can be difficult to know when to seek specialized medical care for such a condition. A keen observation of your child for the following warning signs can help detect neurological disorders at an early stage:

Neurological disorder

  • Delay/decline in developmental milestones
  • Increase/lack of growth in head size
  • Seizures
  • Unresponsive staring episodes
  • Lack of coordination
  • Changes in activity, reflexes, or movements
  • Muscle rigidity or tremors
  • Slow language and/or motor skills
  • Muscle wasting
  • Slurred speech
  • Older children may experience severe headaches or visual changes

Neurological disorder

When your child has lost a skill that they have previously mastered like walking, talking, counting or feeding themselves, it can be a red flag indicating neurological disorder. Most of these conditions can be resolved if detected early but delay or undiagnosed neurological disorders can severely affect the quality of life for your child. Early evaluation by an expert neurologist will give your child the best chance of getting a childhood they deserve.
