Common symptoms that emerge in its more advanced stages include severe back pain swelling, stiffness and abscesses. Although the issue is quite complicated, it can be treated, usually, spinal surgery is necessary, such as a laminectomy (where a part of the vertebrae is removed). Medications are the first line of defence for bone tuberculosis, and the course of treatment can last anywhere from 6–18 months. Treatments include antituberculosis medications, such as rifampicin, isoniazid, ethambutol and pyrazinamide and surgery.

The primary issue with Tuberculosis of the spine is the apparent lack of symptoms in the early stages, if left untreated, there could be permanent paralysis and if t happens in the case of little children, the problems are far worse.

Several growing children, particularly in Uttar Pradesh (which has the highest number of such cases in India), have been diagnosed with this disease.
